Green Facades: How They Improve Acoustic Comfort in Urban Areas

In urban areas, noise pollution is an increasingly pressing challenge. Traffic, construction, and other human activities create a constant background noise that can affect comfort. In addition to traditional solutions such as noise barriers and insulation, research shows that green facades (also known as vertical greenery systems (VGS)) can play a valuable supplementary role in noise reduction.

A widely cited study, “Acoustics evaluation of vertical greenery systems for building walls” by Wong N.H. et al. (2010, Building and Environment), examined the acoustic performance of different types of green facade systems. Here are the key insights for businesses and organizations considering a green facade.

How Green Facades Reduce Noise

Research shows that the effectiveness of VGS depends on both the type of facade and its technical design:

  • Effective at low and mid frequencies

Green facades are particularly useful for low- to mid-frequency noise, such as traffic. Interestingly, the substrate and construction of the facade matter more for noise reduction than the leaves themselves.

  • Sound absorption by substrate and vegetation

Laboratory tests indicate that a well-designed VGS has higher sound absorption than many conventional facade materials. Deeper substrate layers, more porous materials, and denser plant coverage enhance this effect.

  • Limited effect at high frequencies

High-frequency noise is less absorbed and more scattered. Leaves break up the sound but do not absorb it effectively.

  • Not all systems perform the same

Performance varies by type of VGS. Heavier systems with deeper substrate layers and dense vegetation are most effective acoustically, while lighter or more open systems reduce less noise.

Practical Benefits for Businesses

Green facades are not a replacement for traditional noise-control measures, but they do offer important additional advantages:

  • Improved acoustic comfort: Reduced traffic noise in offices or urban gardens.
  • Ecological impact: Supports biodiversity, climate adaptation, and heat reduction.

More Than Just Green

Green facades are living building components that combine aesthetics, ecology, and functionality. They help make cities more climate-resilient and livable, while also dampening urban noise.

For businesses, investing in a green facade is a thoughtful choice: it’s about quality and design, not a quick, magical fix. With proper planning and execution, a VGS can provide visible and measurable benefits for both the building and its surroundings.

A green facade improves acoustic comfort, enhances sustainability, and makes your building more appealing.
